As Havanese breeders of designer crosses, we breed with genetic vitality in mind! Unfortunately, it is estimated that 75% of dogs are at risk to carry a genetic disease. So we focus our Havanese cross-breeding program on reducing this risk through genetic testing. Not only does this inform us of any known genetic problems in our dogs, but it also allows us to prevent inbreeding. As a result, this further reduces the risk of genetic health issues in our puppies.
We use Embark breeder testing for all our Havanese parent dogs. In so doing, our parent dogs are screened for breed-specific genetic issues as well as around 230 other potential non-Havanese-related genetic health problems. Additionally, Embark testing provides Havanese breeders with the genetic COI (Coefficient of Inbreeding or percentage of inbreeding) of each dog. Likewise, Embark provides tools that allow us to determine the eCOI (estimated litter Coefficient of Inbreeding) for any Havanese we choose to breed.
