Have you ever wondered why we have such an epidemic of autoimmunity in dogs despite our modern advancements in medicine and technology? In this article, we will explore exactly what one vitally important research study revealed and how proactive pet parents can actively work to prevent autoimmunity in their fur-babies!
The study regarding autoimmunity in dogs that we will be referencing in this article is a 22-week long research study conducted by Perdue University Vet School in 1999. Sadly, the study has been buried and most veterinarians are not even aware of it. We obtained a copy, so we are providing it here for our readers to use for their own research: Vaccine-Induced Autoimmunity In Dogs. One of the stated goals of the study was to determine if vaccinating puppies creates autoimmunity in those puppies. The results of the study demonstrated with a startling 100% certainty that we are indeed creating autoimmunity in every puppy we vaccinate! 100% of the puppies in the vaccinated puppy group had a significant increase in the development of many different auto-antibodies (antibodies that attack parts of the body instead of attacking diseases). By contrast, 0% of the puppies in the unvaccinated control puppy group had any significant increase in any auto-antibodies at all!
To understand autoimmunity in dogs in a practical way, we are going to examine just two of the auto-antibodies tested in this study. These were two different auto-antibodies to collagen. Both had a significant increase in all the vaccinated puppies, while neither had any significant increase in the unvaccinated puppies. To really grasp how this can affect your puppy’s entire body, here are some key points about collagen and its role in supporting, healing, and maintaining health in the body.
By now, it should be clicking that collagen is absolutely critical to your puppy’s optimal growth, development, and maintenance of a healthy body. Therefore, when a puppy receives a vaccine and then the puppy’s immune system begins attacking its own collagen, it is perfectly logical to assume that puppy is at high risk of developing all kinds of autoimmumity in dogs, such as joint problems, heart problems, skin problems, digestive problems, etc. The list goes on and on.
The ramifications of having auto-antibodies to collagen in your puppy’s body are so far-reaching, it can literally become the difference between a puppy that lives a long and healthy life and a puppy who lives a short life, plagued with countless health problems and huge vet bills. Now consider that the two types of auto-antibodies to collagen that were included in this study were only two of a handful of the auto-antibodies included in this study. And the number of potential types of auto-antibodies being created by vaccines is immeasurable. Pause. Think on that for a moment. It literally is amazing that we have any healthy dogs in our vaccine-laden world. Sadly, although one of the stated goals of this study was to find safer alternatives if the study results proved a connection to autoimmunity, the study was buried instead and nothing has been done to address this very serious flaw with all vaccines that is causing autoimmunity in dogs. In fact, the push for more vaccines has continued to increase, while pet parents are never being informed about these known and very real dangers that every single vaccine poses to their pet.
Although not commonly known - and certainly not acknowledged by most vets - there are very effective, much safer alternatives to vaccinations available to pet parents. These more natural oral immunizations (which we use to immunize our puppies) provide natural support in the development of a strong natural immune system in your pet, but they pose no risk to your pet's health and certainly do not cause autoimmunity in dogs like vaccinations do. Unfortunately, because these safer options are not supported by the big pharmaceutical industry, their use has not been studied widely in big research studies, so they are often dismissed. However, several vets have been using them and seeing amazing results. Dr. Todd Cooney, DVM, is one such vet. He is actually is a graduate of the Perdue University Vet School that conducted the study referenced and linked above. He has been collecting data from the results of using these oral immunizations in his practice with the hopes of submitting the numbers to a research journal to help spread the word. Below are his findings regarding Parvo:
Dr. Todd Cooney's practice is one of the only - if not the only - veterinary clinic in America that has a 0% rate of Parvo infections! Considering how infections Parvo is, these results are absolutely astounding and should cause every pet parent and vet in America to pause and seriously question our current veterinary practices. You can listen to Dr. Todd discuss these results in the two videos below:
A lot of pet parents want to know if there is a way to prevent more autoimmunity in dogs or at least keep them healthier after they have already been vaccinated. The answer is YES and NO. By stopping any future vaccinations, you can prevent the known creation of more auto-antibodies in your pet. That is a huge step. But you can go a lot further and provide your pet with a lot of support to help them heal their own body as well. Each pet is different, so there is no way to know which pets will be able to heal themselves and which will not. So we always encourage that every pet parent provide the support and pray for the best outcome. To provide this support, your pet will need safe, high quality nutrition tailored to your pet's individual needs, emotional support and balancing (because emotions are very often tied directly to physical challenges), and in some cases a constitutional veterinary homeopathic work may be needed.
