We strive to decrease the risk of serious genetic problems and avoid inbreeding through genetic testing. As inbreeding is often associated with genetic health issues, avoiding inbreeding is another critical key to successfully breeding for superior health.
We use Embark breeder testing for all our parent dogs, whether purebred or designer. Because Maltipoos are a mix-breed, our parent dogs are screened for several specific genetic illnesses, including: GM2 Gangliosidosis (HEXB, Poodle Variant), Oculocutaneous Albinism, OCA (SLC45A2, Small Breed Variant), Osteochondrodysplasia, Skeletal Dwarfism (SLC13A1, Poodle Variant), Glycogen Storage Disease Type IA, Von Gierke Disease, and GSD IA (G6PC, Maltese Variant). Our parent dogs are also screened for approximately 230 other potential genetic health problems. With Embark testing, we also gain access to the genetic COI (Coefficient of Inbreeding or percentage of inbreeding) of each of our dogs that we test. Embark also provides breeder tools to help us to predict the eCOI (estimated litter Coefficient of Inbreeding) and benefits and risks of breeding any two dogs that we choose to breed.
