Bach flower remedies are a form of alternative medicine developed by Dr. Edward Bach in the 1930s. The remedies are made from flower extracts and address emotional and mental imbalances that may contribute to physical illness. KEMO -- The Bach Center Newsletter, December 1974 Kemo, a three year old dog, had nervous fits ever since he was a puppy. He used to shake and shiver violently and would bark and bite other dogs and also children. His owner felt the cause was some deep-seated fear, so I gave him Mimulus, with no result, then Aspen, also with no result. It was then that I learned he had suffered many shocks when he was a puppy, and at one time a milk truck had come to rest with its rear wheel on his head. So I gave him Star of Bethlehem. There was tremendous improvement within a month. And after six months Kemo was a quiet, gentle, affectionate dog. SEPARATION ANXIETY -- Barbara Jones This story is about a friend's Cyprus poodle, Poppy, who she rescued from ill treatment. It constantly barked at nothing and seemed to get quite hysterical at times. I made up a remedy of Aspen, Mimulus and Larch, having met the dog and realized how needy it was. Mimulus for its fear of being abandoned once again which manifested itself in its clingy behaviour, Aspen for its tendency to bark at things which were not there. It was full of fear. The Larch was for its lack of confidence. According to the owner the mixture had an almost instantaneous effect, and Poppy has never reverted back to this emotional state. SEIZURES -- Marion Mitchell I have a four-and-a-half year old liver Dalmation who has had seizures since she was 15 months old. She used to have really bad post-ical problems, wandering, pacing and appearing blind and deaf for about an hour after a seizure. My holistic vet told me about using Rescue Remedy either to prevent a seizure, stop one or to help with the after-effects. Since using it on an as-needed basis I have successfully stopped seizures in the middle, and now she never has any post-ical effects. It's been a life saver for us. A HEATHER DOG -- Bianca Uittenbogaard If I select remedies for dogs, I choose mostly a combination of three to five remedies. One time I only used Heather, for an American Staffordshire male who suffered from separation anxiety to the point that he ate himself through a 20cm concrete wall. I gave some advice to the owners on how to treat the dog differently, as they were compensating his time alone with too much attention when they were home, and so aggravating the problem. This dog was cured in just four days.
